HA1966 Corgi   F-4B Phantom II - VMFA-323 Death Rattlers, Vietnam (1,000) £
      Out of stock

HA1966 is McDonnell Douglas F-4B Phantom II of VMFA-323, "Death Rattlers", based at Chu Lai Air Base, Vietnam in 1967. Very low production run of ONLY 1,000 models, of which only a few were imported to the UK.

VMF-323 was commissioned August 1, 1943. In 1964 the squadron became Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 323 (VMFA-323) transitioning to the F-4B Phantom II. Supposedly VMFA-323 became the “Death Rattlers” when 3 squadron pilots killed a 6 foot rattlesnake and hung its skin in the squadron’s ready room. VMFA-323 arrived at Da Nang, South Vietnam on December 1, 1965. On October 6, 1966 the “Death Rattlers” transferred to Chu Lai Air Base. In March 1969 the 323 left South Vietnam having flown over 17,000 sorties. One of the most famous and easily recognized fighter aircraft of the post-WWII era was the McDonnell F-4 Phantom II. This aircraft was developed as a private venture by the aircraft company but was soon ordered by the USN as a carrier-based attack aircraft. Its first flight took place on May 27, 1958 and it entered active service in December 1960. It wasn’t long after the F-4B appeared that a fly-off was set up with USAF front-line fighters. It was no contest, the F-4 performed so well that the USAF ordered their own variant, the F-4C. As time went on, the F-4 evolved into well over a dozen variants.
